In 1974? or so I was in San Francisco to take the est training and heard that Alan Watts had
died. His funeral service was being held at the Green Gulch Zen Center, so I hitch-hiked up
Highway 1 to get there on time. I happened to enter the large room when Ram Dass was
walking in and I sat next to him, just because we were all in line that way. I could only imagine
who was in the room there, recognizing only a few faces from book jackets I'd seen. I don't
remember much of the service itself, but I can tell you that the final dance that Watts arranged
was memorable, spectacular. It was the audience of the present moment of that dance that I'll
never forget. Lots of presence in that room.
