Let me introduce myself. My name is Douglas Downs and I can be reached at “Upsand@sympatico.ca”. Note the “ca”. I live in Hamilton,
Ontario, Canada, which, for the curious is at the western end of Lake Ontario or an hour’s commute south-west from Toronto. That
having been said, I am no stranger to this site. Actually, I was in contact with John in March of 1998 before the site was actualized. At
that point in time I was searching for a Buddhist-oriented psychotherapist having exhausted all of the traditional avenues of Western
medicine in terms of dysthymia, disability, diabetes - its a long list. At this point in time, the search has become a vigil and I find myself
being a lamp unto myself.
There is something a little incongruent, though, about the problem trying to solve the problem which oftentimes leads me here. As I said
to John yesterday this: “site as been an inspiration even when I could not follow my own breath.” The thanks that I warmly extended to
him, I also extend to all of you. You might gather from the reference that I am not altogether unfamiliar with meditation. Being a lay
practitioner of the existential faith, at a Zen Temple in Toronto, I like to believe I bring some mindfulness into my daily life when I
arise from my zafu and zabuton. Possibly delusion should be included in the above list under “D”.
At any rate, you may wonder why I should choose to make my presence know now or ever for that matter. Motives interest me. On the
one hand, as of late, I find the conversation engaging, to be precise it engages me exactly where I live. On the other hand, I find myself
increasingly uncomfortable with eavesdropping. Unethical is a word that comes to mind. An apology seems only appropriate for being
That’s enough autobiography for now. Besides, if you get out your Wheelbook in the days and letters to come, I think that you will find
that I am rather transparent.
