I think that by being mindful we can become aware of the presence
of "fear". The fear activates the protective layer but sometimes fear
exists from our last exposure to that individual, situation, etc. when
there is really no need to be fearful NOW. If we can get really good
at the mindfulness game I think this is a way to help us be more aware
of when we are re-acting to old hurts or experiencing a real hurt in
the here and now. Real hurts may require the protective layer to be
brought forth again or not, but you can learn to judge that from each
individual situation instead of responding to your history.
I'm certainly not "good" at this yet.. I always find that it is after
the situation is over that I see it for what it is.. but I strongly
believe over time and practice I will become better at being
responsible for turning the layers off and on -- instead of them being
automatic.
